Since our childhood we have been told that if we want to have healthy and shiny teeth, we should brush them twice a day. We all know that not brushing our teeth would lead to cavities and is a bad dental health routine. But have you ever thought what would happen if you don’t brush (read: clean) your tongue every day?
Tongue cleaning is an important hygienic practice that helps in removal of dead skin cells, bacteria, toxins, fungi and food debris from the surface of the tongue. Most of the stench causing bacteria stay around and on your tongue. Tongue cleaning can help us with a variety of health issues by boosting your immune system, helping in digestion and thus, improving your dental health. On the contrary, if you don’t clean your tongue everyday, you can contract many health conditions such as follows.
First thing that happens when you don’t clean your tongue every day is halitosis, also known as bad breath. If the tongue is not cleaned every day, the bacteria starts building up on your tongue and after sometime it starts giving a foul smell.
Not cleaning your tongue can not only lead to tongue related problems but also cause gum disease. Sometimes, when you brush your teeth, they bleed profusely. We usually think it’s a gum-related problem, which is true mostly but not everytime. It can be gingivitis, which is a tongue related problem and it can make your gums red, swollen and bleeding.
Not brushing your tongue can make your gums weak and susceptible to bacteria attack. This may affect your teeth in the long run and you may slowly begin to lose them. If you don’t want this happen, clean your tongue regularly. Also, brushing your teeth for too long can damage your teeth. So, avoid doing that.
Have you ever faced a situation where you didn’t get the taste of what you were eating? It may be because you have lost your sense of taste due to bacteria, food residues and dead skin which are covering your tongue. The outcome of this is that you will not have a sharp sense of taste.
